The above is from a preliminary version of a leaflet prepared in
1998. It concerns the "Bosque Natural Huashapamba"--a nature
reserve owned by the Saraguro communities of Ilincho, Las Lagunas
and Gunudel-Gulacpamba. With altitudes ranging between 2800 and
3000 meters it is mainly covered in very dense cloud forest and
is home to a wide variety of plants and animals, some of them in
danger of extinction. "Ecotourists" are welcome to
visit the reserve. It is easy to reach by bus since the Panamerican
Highway cuts through the lower edge of the reserve (see top photo).
Visitors should check in with the forest guardian who is usually
present in the area along the highway. A small entry fee is charged.
